Art exhibition honours memory of local painter

An art exhibition staged in Newquay paying tribute to local artist Howard West has been hailed a huge success. Many people visited the show held at the Alternative Hall on Marcus Hill for four days from Tuesday, August 26,
Howard was tragically killed in an accident last year. The exhibition is the first of many planned by the Howard West Foundation.

On show was some of Howard's work he completed during the last seven years of his life. The works spanned many genres including silk screen prints, charcoals, oils and pastels. Howard's wife Roberta West and two of their children, Kim 11-years-old and Ross nine, would like to thank all the friends and family who helped to make the exhibition a success.

Roberta said: "The boys and I couldn't stop smiling all night, people were so complimentary about Howard's work, many had never before seen.

"Howard was modest about his art. He just got on to the next piece. "He always said, "An artist is only as good as his or her next creation". Roberta says of his work, "It is art for art's sake and comes from the soul, not for tourist consumption.

"Howard created in a very distinct and painterly way of all the great masters and sends a message of human understanding. His work captures the viewer and evokes deep thought provoking emotions. At face value Howard's work is figurative but surrealism and abstraction feature at a deeper level. Howard was a sensitive soul and on Tuesday he finally shone like the star he always was in
life - blindingly brightly."

Next year Roberta and her family plan a shorter exhibition around his birthday in June. And also a bigger and longer showing of his work in St Ives during the year.
